THIS is the shocking moment a gunman opened fire on Imran Khan at a rally today in an alleged assassination attempt.

The former Pakistani prime minister was shot in the leg while he was was giving a speech from his campaign truck in Wazirabad in the east of the country.

Horrifying footage captured the moment a hail of gunfire ripped through Khan’s convoy as he stood on top of a container truck moving slowly through a packed crowd.

Khan, 70, was rushed to hospital – but his party said he had survived the “assassination attempt”.

Raoof Hasan, a senior Khan aide, said he was shot in the leg at the packed political rally.

“He is in a stable condition,” Hasan said. “This was an attempt to kill him, to assassinate him.”

Former information minister Fawad Chaudhry, who was standing behind Khan, said: “There was a guy who was in front of the container who had this automatic pistol.

“He fired a burst. Everyone who was standing in the very front row got hit.”

He said supporters in the crowd tried to snatch the gun from the attacker.

“In that scuffle he missed the target. There was so much blood on the container,” he said.

Khan with later seen limping with a bandage on his foot as he waved and smiled to the crowds.

Shocking footage showed mass panic in the crowd as the playboy-turned-politician was bundled into a car after the shooting.

It’s understood the gunman was quickly arrested after crowds pinned him down.

Khan was travelling in a large convoy of trucks and cars on route to Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, as part of his campaign to force the government to hold early elections.

He was moved to another vehicle from his container truck after he was shot.

But some of Khan’s supporters from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party were also injured in the attack – and one was killed.

Party spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry said: “Imran Khan and Faisal Javed received bullets wounds.

“A bullet hit Imran Khan’s shin. Both have been taken to hospital for treatment.”

He added: “If the shooter had not been stopped by people there, the entire PTI leadership would have been wiped out.”

Javed was pictured sat on the side of a road covered in blood.

He told Geo TV from the hospital that “several of our colleagues are wounded”.
