I’ve run my discount store for 47 years – we sell everything… but there is ONE thing people always come back for

A SHOPKEEPER who is closing his discount store after 47 years has revealed the one item that customers always want to buy.

Alfred Dolbear, 76, has run his shop ‘Alfie’s’ in Cullompton, Devon since 1976.

Before he closes down he has revealed to Devon Live which item customers always come back to buy more of.

“I find our leading sellers are household toiletries, stationery, spray paints and garden stuff.”

However, the most in-demand items are… bin bags.

“The biggest seller we have got is black bag refuse sacks”, says Alfred.

“We sell the best bag you’ll ever buy, and British-made too.”

“When it went on Facebook I was closing, we had 194 people wanting to know where they’re going to get their bags.”

That’s not all the shop’s good for though, as Alfred went on to say.

“It is a discount store ; you name it, we’ve got it, and if we haven’t got it, we can soon get it.”

“Glass hammers, wood screwdrivers, we have it all.”

The salesman is taking a well-earned retirement after nearly 50 years.

“Working here has always been profitable, but it’s a lot of hours. You’re talking six days a week nonstop. I’ve been wholesaling for years, supplying other shops with stuff too.

“I’ve loved every moment of being here in Cullompton, the company, the people and I will miss meeting the people and putting the world to rights.”

His retirement means the long-standing shop is closing down as both his sons have successful careers and don’t wish to take over the business.

“I’m going to keep open until I’ve sold most of my stock, and when I finally get around to closing, it’ll be lovely, and I’ll get to put my feet up.”

“I’d like to thank all my customers who have supported me over the years. Without them, I would have been nothing. I’ve always looked after them, and they’ve always looked after me.”
