‘I can’t believe it’ – Arsenal legend Ian Wright left speechless as England beat Germany in Women’s Euro 2022 final

IAN WRIGHT was ecstatic after England Women were crowned champions of Europe.

The Arsenal legend, 58, has been a huge supporter of the women’s game for years and wants Euro 2022 to leave a lasting legacy.

He also shared how proud he was of Sarina Wiegman’s team and his delight that all their hard work has paid off.

Appearing on the BBC’s coverage of the match as a pundit, Wright said: “I can’t put into words how much work has gone into this and they’re getting what they deserve.

“I’m so proud, I can’t believe it! I’m still a bit shocked by it.

“She (Wiegman) has used that XI through the whole of the tournament but the people that are coming on know that they’ve got a role to play and they’re happy to come off the bench and play their role.

“Every single player has played a part. It hurts (to lose a final). I walked past the trophy in 2009 and it stayed with me forever. I’m so happy.”

Wright has won praise for his punditry throughout the tournament and fans once again applauded him after the final.

One supporter wrote: “Obsessed with how much of a vocal advocate for women’s football Ian Wright continues to be. Legend.”

Another added: “Alex Scott and Ian Wright are such brilliant pundits – they understand football, its history and its politics. And they’re bloody great people.

And a third said: “Ian Wright is just magnificent. He is wise, thoughtful, authentic and inspirational. A genuine national treasure.”

After England thrashed Sweden 4-0 in the semi-final Wright had a warning for the government and those that run the game.

He said: “Whatever happens in the final now, if girls are not allowed to play football in their PE, just like the boys can, what are we doing?

“We have got to make sure they are able to play and get the opportunity to do so.

“If there’s no legacy to this – like with the Olympics – then what are we doing as this is as proud as I’ve ever felt of any England side.”
