Gareth Southgate Names Provisional England Squad For Euro 2020

Gareth Southgate has named an expanded provisional England squad ahead of the Euro 2020 tournament.

With plenty of his players involved in European finals this week and a number of regulars facing a race against time to fit for the campaign, the Three Lions boss has opted to pick 33 players.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jesse Lingard are both in, while Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been drafted in as a replacement for the injured Nick Pope.

With England sweating over the fitness of Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire, Brighton defender Ben White and Everton’s Ben Godfrey have both been called up for the first time.

White had an impressive first season in the Premier League in 2020/21, playing 36 games and showing a level of versatility that has caught Southgate’s eye.

The former Leeds United loanee can play in a back three, as a right-back or even as a defensive midfielder if necessary. White has never been capped by England at any level and goes straight into the first-team fold.

Godfrey, meanwhile, has also been called up to the squad after a strong season at Goodison Park. Norwich, his former employers, are in line to receive a six-figure fee if the 23-year-old plays at the Euros.

Maguire, Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips have all made the cut despite being injured at the time of the announcement.

Notable omissions from the provisional squad include James Maddison, Danny Ings, Patrick Bamford and Eric Dier.

Southgate will then whittle his squad down to 26 by the 1 June deadline before England play friendlies against Austria and Romania at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium on 2 June and 6 June respectively.

England kick off their Euros campaign against Croatia on June 13, before a tasty clash with Scotland at Wembley five days later.

Their final Group D fixture comes against Czech Republic on 22 June.
