‘Anxious’ Cameron Diaz comes out of retirement after eight years for new Netflix thriller Back in Action

Cameron Diaz is coming out of acting retirement after eight years – and she has her sights set on Netflix stardom.

The Charlie’s Angels star hasn’t made a film since 2014, when she starred in an adaptation of the musical Annie alongside Jamie Foxx, who was her co-star in 1999 film Any Given Sunday.

Elizabeth Banks directs this instalment of Charlie’s Angels, which sees two angels, Kristen Stewart and Ella Balinska joined by Naomi Scott.

She is the programmer of a new sustainable energy device – the Calisto – which she realises could easily be hacked to kill people.

But the flimsy plot of their quest to stop the bad guys stealing it, and then trying to get it back when they inevitably do, is overridden by the constant need to ram a sermon of sexism down viewers’ throats.

The laughs are minimal, apart from one scene when a baddie is smacked around the head with a computer mouse.

The 49-year-old will now return to screens alongside Foxx for a brand new Netflix comedy film titled Back in Action from Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon.

Foxx announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday after sharing a recording of a conversation the pair had.

He wrote: “Cameron, I hope you aren’t mad I recorded this, but no turning back now.

“Had to call in the GOAT to bring back another GOAT. Cameron Diaz and I are back in action – our new movie with Netflix. Production starting later this year!”

In the call, Foxx loops Diaz in with NFL star Tom Brady, who gave the actor his tips on successfully “un-retiring”.

“I feel excited, but I don’t know how to do this, you know?’ Diaz said on the call, referencing her break from acting.

A source told RadarOnline the former actress turned down “dozens” of roles over the past few years.

The insider told the website: “It’s no exaggeration to say she could have banked up to $100million – or even more – if she’d been working instead of resting and planning her domestic future.”

Once one of the highest-paid actresses, the insider revealed turning down the roles “is a price worth paying.”

In January 2020, Diaz celebrated the birth of her first child, cementing her dramatic transformation from tireless film star to a doting wife and mum living “off-the-radar.”

Cameron Diaz has spent years keeping a low profile after quitting her glittering movie career to dedicate time to herself and her rock star husband, Benji Madden.

“I’ve given more than half of my life to the public. I feel it’s OK for me to take time for myself now,” Cameron told InStyle.

She told pal, Gwyneth Paltrow, in 2020 that she was at “peace” since walking away from her lucrative Hollywood career.
